ARTIST SPOTLIGHT - Tamara Armstrong

Living and working from her purpose built studio in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Tamara Armstrong is an Australian visual artist who says she has been exposed to the arts for as long as she can remember.

Armstrong says she paints to understand life and cultural heritage. Taking her love and appreciation of colour and nature and combining it with her contemporary view of ‘connection’ to create one of a kind artwork.

Growing up in a family with a love for art, Armstrong graduated from the Queensland University of Technology in 2003 with a double-degree in Visual Art and Secondary Education. Working in education for over 12 years, she entered the professional art world as a practicing artist in 2011.

When we came across Tamara’s work, we were instantly impressed with the way her art interprets the concepts of Self and Representation. Currently, we have one piece available from her collection, the Melanin Garden 100% Natural Fibre Scarf. The scarf is a portrait depicting Anisa Nadaula - a Brisbane based Poet, Social Advocate, Playwright, and Author.

Armstrong designed the portrait with the aim of depicting Anisa’s Strength and conviction. Anisa, having been born in Uganda and moved to Australia at the age of 8-years-old, is known for her advocacy and passion for social justice after noticing the inequality in living standards between the country she now calls home and the country she had grown up in during her first 8 years.

Armstrong wanted the piece to reflect the challenges faced and tenacity needed as a proud black woman growing up in a whitewashed Australia. Having performed her poetry on some of the world’s largest stages, Anisa is now known for her profound and insightful takes on political and social justice issues.

The ‘Women Of Colour’ collection by Armstrong is now one of her most well known and ambitious series, highlighting strength, representation, and the correlation between nature and feminine beauty. The collection also raises funds for various Australian NFPs and Charities.
