The story behind the artwork

As an artist, I am drawn to the timeless beauty and sophistication of Art Deco and my portrait of fellow artist and presenter Claudia Chan Shaw reflects this passion. I was inspired by her shared love of the movement and sought to capture her essence as an Art Deco goddess. I have painted Claudia as a bronze sculpture referencing the Austrian sculptor Lorenzl, who was renowned for his Art Deco style. Her elegant posture, stylised hair and striking features embody the bold, glamorous spirit of the era.

About the artist

John Klein is a contemporary Australian artist who has been engaged in creative pursuits his entire career. His love for the visual arts has seen him drawn to the mediums of film, photography and painting. He is a Doug Moran National Portrait Prize finalist (2017) and Kennedy Prize finalist (2018).

The story behind the artwork

Bright, sunlight-filled mornings at the breakfast table are among my favourite times. Surrounded by carefully chosen flowers and art books to wander through, I sit quietly with my morning tea. These simple rituals feel grounding and inspiring, a gentle pause before the day begins, where light, colour, and creativity softly set the tone for everything that follows.

About the artist

After growing up in Broken Hill and living in Adelaide and Sydney, I traveled to Europe, fell in love with Italy and made Florence the base for my textile-design business. In the 22 years since, I have produced fabric designs for high-end fashion labels such as Blumarine, Etro, Roberto Cavalli and Enrico Coveri. I have also participated in numerous art exhibitions. I am passionate about art.

About the artist

I’m an Australian artist from the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains. After living in Tel Aviv, London, New York and France for decades, I decided to move to the beautiful Blue Mountains. I obtained my Diploma in Fine Arts in 2012. I paint in a studio surrounded by flowers and nature, close to bushwalks and mountains outside my door. I’m a true colourist which I try to capture with my art practice.
